A native of Hendricks County, Ind., Smith served during the Civil War with the 133rd Indiana Infantry and the 109th U.S. Colored Infantry. John Armstrong was a soldier, merchant, and land speculator. A soldier from 1776 to 1793, he was commandant at Forts Pitt and Hamilton, and participated in the campaigns of Harmar and St. Clair. After retiring from the army, Armstrong ran a general store near Cincinnati and speculated in land.
